Nights Under the Stars

A night of stargazing with experts from IUCAA, on a farm 60 km from Pune, under one of the darkest skies within reach of the city.

Stargazing at Sujalam Sufalam is an overnight astronomy camp on a farm near Rajgad Fort, about 60 km from Pune. Experts and researchers from IUCAA, the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics in Pune, lead it, and it’s made for curious people, not astronomers.

You start by learning to read the sky with your own eyes: the constellations, the brightest planets, how to find your way from one star to the next. Then the telescopes come out, and whatever is up that night, the Moon, planets, star clusters, turns from a point of light into something you can see. Before dawn you’re up again for the morning sky.

Between the sessions there’s home-cooked vegetarian food, a tent or a cottage to sleep in, and an hour to wander the farm as it gets dark. Everyone goes home with a certificate of participation.

The Night

A briefing, the telescopes, and the sky again before dawn, all led by experts from IUCAA.

    Getting to know the sky

From half past seven, experts and researchers from IUCAA walk you through the night sky by eye, before anyone touches a telescope.

  2. A guest bending to the eyepiece of a large white telescope at night, others waiting their turn.

    At the telescopes

Two or three telescopes, set up on the farm. After dinner the sky is yours until midnight, and the experts are right there to point the way.

    Before dawn

At half past four the telescopes come out again. Yes, it’s early. The morning sky shows you things the evening can’t.
